How to Thread a Sewing Machine
How to Thread a Sewing
Machine
For a beginner threading a sewing machine can be a daunting task. All those small holes and that tiny
thread with the frayed end!
With practice it will soon be a piece of cake and take you no more than a few seconds. Threading a
sewing machine does require a bit of good aim and good eyesight so use reading glasses if you need
them.
1. By turning the hand wheel
toward you, raise the needle to the highest position.
2. Raise the presser foot. There
should be a lever to do this. This allows the thread to easily pass the treading points and prevents the needle
from unthreading when you start sewing.
3. Put the thread spool on the
spool pin on top of the sewing machine. Secure it with a cap if provided.
4. Hold the end of the thread
and slip it through the marked threading points on the machine casing, down toward the tension assembly.
5. Wind the thread under the
tension assembly and back up through the next marked threading point the left top of the machine. Ensure that the
thread has passed between 2 tensions discs as well as the hook that is attached to the tension
dial.
6. Slip the thread end through
lever at the top left of the machine and down through the threading points at the bottom left and above the
needle.
7. Finally it’s time to thread
the needle. Thread the needle from the either the front or back depending on the type of your
machine.
8. Pull a few inches of thread
through the hole or eye of the needle and to the left
9. Place a wound bobbin into the
appropriate slot in the machine. This should be below the needle. Pull a few inches of bobbin thread out to stick
up from the bobbin plate.
10. Hold the thread at the needle
and rotate the handwheel toward you until the needle sinks into the bobbin case
11. Continue holding the thread
while you move the handwheel until the needle returns to its highest position.
12. Your machine is now
threaded!
