Sewing Machine
Parts
Sewing can be a fun, creative and fulfilling hobby. There
are a few things you can do to make sure your sewing machine stays in tip top operating condition. Your machine
was a big investment and it does not take much time or money to maintain it properly. With proper maintenance of
the sewing machine parts your machine will have a long life.
The place to begin when maintaining your sewing machine parts is the owner’s manual that came with the
machine. There should be recommended steps to prevent your machine
from breaking down. It is important you review this manual and
follow the manufacturer’s guidelines.
Lubricating
Oil
One periodic maintenance task for your sewing machine is to add oil. Oil keeps your sewing machine
parts lubricated allowing the machine to perform properly. Additionally it prevents unnecessary wear and tear on
your sewing machine parts. Unfortunately you cannot use any standard oil. You should use and easy to find clear
oil specially designed for sewing machines. Using the correct oil will assure that you do not damage any of your
sewing machines internal parts. Your machine manufacturers operating manual should have a section telling you
exactly how to oil your machine. After oiling it is important that you run some stitches on a piece of scrap
fabric to insure no excess oil drips out. You would hate to ruin an important project with leaking
oil.
Tighten Loose
Screws
When cleaning your machine it is necessary to ensure that all screws are tightened to the proper
tension. Your manual should have information including diagrams showing just which screws to tighten. Most
sewing machines come with a small accessory kit including a small screwdriver just the right size and length to
reach all the screws on your machine. There are some screws that keep parts of the machine at proper tension.
These are usually hex screws and should only be adjusted by a professional sewing machine repair
person.
Cleaning Your Sewing
Machine
Sewing unfortunately results in lots of lint. This lint when built up inside your machine can
interfere with your sewing machine parts and cause unnecessary wear and tear and possibly damage. It is a good
practice to clean your machine of lint periodically. You should receive a special brush or tool in your
accessory kit specially designed to remove the lint that accumulates in all the cracks and crevices.
Cover Your Sewing
Machine
One of the easiest ways to keep your sewing machine in tip top condition and avoid damage to sewing
machine parts is to keep it covered. Add-on cover weather hard or soft can keep your machine clean and lint
free.
Professional Maintenance
Unfortunately proper care of your sewing machine cannot replace the periodic professional maintenance
that is required. Periodically your machine will require the attentions of a professional to oil internal parts
you cannot reach and to correctly adjust the tension of the hex screws.
With proper care and maintenance your sewing machine will give you many long years of trouble free
enjoyment.
